DESERT OASIS HEALTHCARE w/ Dr. Brian Hodgkins re: Executive V.P. of Clinical Operations; 275 El Cielo Rd., Palm Springs, 92262.
– DISCUSSION of what happens when one is hospitalized; 1. Patient stays on a ventilator in ICU for 8 to 14 days; 2. Patient is sedated; 3. Patient is paralyzed; 4. MONTHS of recovery returning home, possible cardiac damage too.
– REPORT on hydroxychloroquine that were used to treat malaria. Thought is that it blocks the virus getting into the cell. Given orally. Study in France looks promising. Question is the timing of the effectiveness of the drug. Not as beneficial AFTER the symptoms become more serious.
– DISCUSSION of convalescence serum. Taking blood from a person who has recovered from the virus and giving it to ill patients.
– DOHC and Dr. Hodgkins is up-to-date from all the information from the CDC, etc., So is the www.mydohc.com website.

BROOKDALE MIRAGE INN w/ Kurt Suminski 72750 Country Club Dr., Rancho Mirage, CA., 92270. He’s the Clare Bridge/Memory Co-ordinator.
– DISCUSSION of the Three levels @ Brookdale care provides: 1.) Independent Living 2). Assisted Living and 3.) Memory Care/Alzheimer’s/Dementia (Clare Bridge). Open campus.
– DISCUSSION of how the atmosphere @ Brookdale.
– REPORT that the residents are still in “a community” so not such a feeling of isolation. Staff making certain meals, medication etc. go on as needed.
– REPORT that the buildings are “shut down”, except for restricted services needed i.e. hospice.
– DISCUSSION that some activities are reduced to conform w/ social distancing. REPORT that the residents call in their meal service and the meals are delivered to each resident’s room. Residents are sitting in their doorways and carry on conversations w/ other diners in theirs.
– REPORT that there is a MOBILE COCKTAIL cart.
– REPORT that the staff that comes and goes is constantly checked.
– VACANCIES are only in Assisted Living. Need to call and have a “virtual tour” to see the facility. Can do a “porch patio” conversational visit.
– REPORT that any new residents will have the 14-day quarantine that is in place for the whole country.

DEMENTIA HELP CENTER w/ Kae Hammond re: President & Founder; 495 Town Center Way, 44 Ste., B, Palm Desert, CA. 92260.
– DISCUSSION of people suffering from a great sense of isolation in these times. 98 forms of dementia.
– DISCUSSION that routine is the most important part of life for an Alzheimer’s/Dementia patient.
– REPORT that the approach is as for a child. i.e. short attention span and need for attention.
– DISCUSSION that homes now have Alzheimer’s patients, kids out of school, spouses etc., @ home ad that the proper music on in the background will be very helpful. Re: Dr. Oliver Sacks.
– REPORT that Spectrum has music channels from #1901-1944 and Frontier is #1801-1900. Patients respond better to the music they heard when they were younger.
– DISCUSSION that the worst thing you can do is let these patients watch the news. i.e. Sirens, gun shots etc., are alarming to them. Patients don’t make the connection that it is a fantasy.
– DISCUSSION of the tranquil tv shows that patients can watch and be soothed. i.e. Nat. Geo, Hallmark, PBS.
– REPORT to put your loved one in the car and take a drive.
– Caregivers can call for support and coaching to combat the loneliness and isolation. Also via Zoom. Call anytime.

– REPORT on how funerals are being conducted now. They are considered a essential service.
– REPORT that @ this point in time only 10 folks can be in the Chapel @ a time and can’t gather outside. Names have to be provided to Forest Lawn by the family.
– DISCUSSION that many families are waiting to do services until this is over.
– REPORT that they can film the interment for the family.
– DISCUSSION of the changes in the emotions and anxiety for families who can’t grieve together now.
– DISCUSSION that Forest Lawn is having to follow state guidelines, these are not FL rules.
– Internet services are getting more popular.
– REPORT on the change in the grieving process. Worst thing is that we can’t hug and console each other.
– REPORT on how Forest Lawn is handling the deceased person. Practicing universal precautions as they always have. Virus doesn’t last long on a deceased person or a body in a casket.

– REPORT on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation and the procedures they are going thru @ NVC to keep everyone healthy.

– NVC is the only facility of its kind IN THE WORLD and families will be missing the “break” from each other provided by the NVC.
