BROOKDALE MIRAGE INN w/ Kurt Suminski 72750 Country Club Dr., Rancho Mirage, CA., 92270. He’s the Clare Bridge/Memory Facility Co-Ordinator.
– DISCUSSION of the Three levels @ Brookdale care provides: 1.) Independent Living 2). Assisted Living and 3.) Memory Care/Alzheimer’s/Dementia (Clare Bridge). All are to “shelter-in-place”.
– REPORT that we are doing a “porch visit” @ Brookdale in Rancho Mirage.
– REPORT on how visitors can have a “porch visit” w/ their loved one during this Pandemic.
– DISCUSSION that Brookdale needs to protect residents living INSIDE and staff coming in from the OUTSIDE.
– REPORT that resident who still drive may have their vehicle @ Brookdale. If residents DON’T drive Brookdale has vehicles that will drive the residents.
– REPORT that there is a vacancy in Assisted Living, NEAR THE POOL. Those classes will return, hopefully soon.
– REPORT that Brookdale is VERY PRIVATE. The residents feel safe and secure.
– REPORT on communications during the Pandemic. Virtual visits w/ families are popular. Visits thru email, facetime, Pen Pals!!!! skyping, Zoom, porch visits thru the windows, etc. Families are happy to know their loved one is in such a safe facility.
– REPORT that the atmosphere is very positive for residents and staff.
– REPORT on the new way of residents “socializing” w/ Ashley, the lifestyles director in Assisted Living. For cocktails, meals, hobbys, etc.,
– REPORT that even during the Pandemic, Ashley is working on different types of exercise to keep residents moving.
– REPORT on the advantage of being @ Brookdale and not home alone and of being constantly monitored.
– REPORT on how deliveries are accomplished while the facility is “closed” to the public.
– DESCRIPTION of the beautiful grounds, wind chimes, roadrunners, etc.

DEMENTIA HELP CENTER w/ Kae Hammond re: President & Founder; 495 Town Center Way, 44 Ste., B, Palm Desert, CA. 92260.
– DISCUSSION of her participation in “relocating” a 98-year-old client from Brookdale to the hospital. How we might all start to think about this process.
– REPORT on treating the possessions of a client w/ dignity and respect, even if the person has dementia/alzheimers and look for “treasures” in between the pages of a magazine or a book i.e.
– DISCUSSION that many folks put MONEY in between the pages of a book/bible etc.
– DISCUSSION that there is great pleasure in a “memory afternoon” w/ a patient.
– REPORT on the psychology of “why” folks put different treasures “where”. Important to look in drawers, and under shelf liners and under drawer liners. Some older folks even put their money in foil and put it in the freezer!!!!
– REPORT that finding these “treasures” may trigger a conversation w/ a client and might also be a blessing for the person assisting the client.
– REPORT on the calls she gets and the questions she is asked.

– REPORT on how death is handled during COVID-19 Pandemic. No one has ever gotten any disease from a deceased person @ Forest Lawn.
– DISCUSSION that Forest Lawn practices “Universal Precaution” NOW and always has. Sometimes there is a veil placed over the deceased as an extra precaution.
– REPORT that our own mortality is being discussed more during this Pandemic. Time to make your final plans. Forest Lawn is having these conversations over the phone, on-line etc., Paperwork can even be done over the phone and virtually as well.
– REPORT that Forest Lawn’s concern is not only for the deceased who died of COVID-19 but the family that has been w/ the deceased during those final days. So contact is withheld for the 14 day incubation period. – DISCUSSION of how Forest Lawn handles Jewish services. Forest Lawn can bury people on Sunday. Concern is for the living mourners, of course.
– Forest Lawn provides masks for anyone who doesn’t have one.
– REPORT that more people are passing away of course, during this Pandemic.
– REMEMBER that Forest Lawn is actually part of the “first responders” category.
– REPORT that Forest Lawn has NEVER been closed, is considered an essential business

NEURO VITALITY CENTER w/ Bev Greer re: Chief Executive Officer @ 2800 E. Alejo Road, Palm Springs, CA. 92262.
– Their Mission Statement. Out-patient services only, etc. Over 40 years in existence. Only facility of its kind IN THE WORLD.
– REPORT that their facility is closed to the public @ this point in time. Kitchen, gym, nurse, social worker etc., still working in one form or another, thanks to all the technology. NO ONE IN THE NVC FAMILY HAS TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19.
– REPORT on NVC being an adult day care center.
– REPORT that most of their services have been converted to virtual presentations. i.e. actually can interact w/ more people virtually because all services are still available EVERYWHERE.
– DISCUSSION that even w/ the age of their clients, all is working rather well. Only those clients w/ cognitive issues have special circumstances. She worries about helping the Alzheimers/Dementia folks who don’t quite understand what is going on, ONLY THAT THINGS ARE DIFFERENT. Music seems to help these folks.
– DISCUSSION on how we have folks filling roles they aren’t familiar with up to now.
– NVC is providing tablets AND instruction to their clients who are sheltering @ home so they can take advantage of the virtual on-line classes and services.
– REPORT on new ways to help younger clients w/ TBI, etc.
– REPORT that they deliver lunch to folks who are homebound.
– DISCUSSION that NVC is willing to advise and/or help you if you have someone living w/ you that NOW needs some guidance and assistance.
– DISCUSSION of how new patients are incorporated into the system and how these new folks can be serviced, ANYWHERE in the world. Stressing HOPE.

Leads the COVID-10 Taskforce.
– REPORT that we are now starting our 20th week of “Sheltering in Place”.
– REPORT that the U.S. leads the World w/ 5 million cases.
– In Riverside County, Surge is slowing. Hospital admits slowing. DOHC is under 10 admittance. Younger patients are getting out w/ shorter stays.
– Riverside County has 35,000 to 40,000 cases now.
– 7% to 9% of U.S. population has been exposed. We need 50 to 60% exposure to reach “herd immunity”.
– New report will be able to tract the mortality rate via either infection mortality rate (0.3% + 0.8% or 5 out of 1,000 deaths, but less than MERS, SARS or EBOLA) or case mortality rate.
– Testing results now coming quicker.
– REPORT that the CDC wants schools to open. Children have trouble understanding “social distancing”. Teachers are not in favor of this due to exposure to the virus.
