– REPORT of their mission statement and that Neuro Vitality Center is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC 5 days a week; 8 AM to 2 PM.
– ANNOUNCEMENT; Open Mic is back!!!! Every Wednesday. Tonight doors open @ 6 PM, performing starts @ 6:30 to 9 PM. Joel Baker on keyboard. Now the volunteer staff is doing a snack bar and drinks. Fee is $10. Bring you sheet music AND IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANY, don’t worry, Joel can play anything.
– REPORT that last week there were 18 performers. Come and be in the audience if you don’t want to perform. GREAT SHOW and very professional.
– ANNOUNCEMENT of the Saturday Showcase Shows.
Will begin in Oct., One artist does 1 hour. No real audition, just go in and talk to Allan. Allan will even “mentor” beginners. This has been very successful…i.e. The Palms in the High Desert.
– REPORT that there will be a Saturday Showcase every Sat., thru the end of April, 2024.
– ANNOUNCEMENT that Sun., Sept., 17 from 1 – 4 PM. Allan is holding auditions for “Forbidden Broadway” @ the NVC. This that will be produced in the Foundation Lounge @ NVC the last two weeks in Oct.,
– REPORT the state has just ruled that the CBAS Program (thru the Dept. of Aging and their standard of care) and the Desert Memory Center can now be combined for clients.
– REPORT on the Memory Care Facility.

DEMENTIA HELP CENTER w/ Lisa Stanford, a family care co-ordinator. re: 75-270 Hwy., 111, Ste., 204, Indian Wells 92210.
– MISSION STATEMENT that Dementia Help Center is the rescue plan for family caregivers. Offer individual and family coaching, personalized planning, care management and placement when the time comes. Fear cripples, but knowledge empowers.
– REPORT that you should go from “care giver” to “care manager”. 70% of family members caring for a family member will develop a life-,.threatening illness.
– REPORT on their bi-monthly “THRIVE” support group for ALL LEVELS IS BACK. Open to clients, family, care-givers. Also have a ZOOM meeting. Call for the link. FREE CONSULTATIONS. Indian Wells group meets 1st and 3rd Wed., of each month. La Quinta group meets 2nd and 4th Wed., in Old Town. of each month.

1. Is there a simple drawing test to determine if someone has dementia? (Yes, the clock test. First draw a circle for a clock, size is an indicator also, then put the numbers for hours on the face, then draw the hands for a specified time.)
– REPORT that folks w/ the beginning signs of Alzheimer’s and Dementia are really good @ hiding it.
2. Can breathing smoke lead to Dementia? (Yes, just reported that long term exposure to smoke such as wild fires, farm burns, because the components in this smoke is different than cigarette smoke. Especially dangerous for fire fighters, etc.).

– REPORT that senior centers are changing. Now we are dealing w/ the Baby Boomer Generation. There were/are 90 million of them. They have more social service needs, they have financial fees, association fees.
– REPORT that they have started a Wellness Center in 2017. Provides counseling services for all senior situational issues. Also have Spanish speaking counseling.
– ANNOUNCMENT that Joslyn Center is in collaboration w/ The Joslyn Wellness Center and The Volunteers in Medicine for bi-lingual counselors.
One place for all these services.
– REPORT that they do 75-80 programs a week.
– HOLD THE DATE; Developed by the UCLA Longevity Center. How to improve our memory and brain health. Tues., Sept., 12 and Sept., 19 and then Wed., Sept., 20 and 27 for the “BRAIN BOOK CAMP”.
– REPORT on tips for your brain health.
1. If you are alone, you are more likely to develop an unhealthly brain.
2. Class teaches you “pay attention”.

– QUESTION from “Joey Pals”
1. Can you lose your Medicare Coverage? (If you are on Medicare Advantage, these plans are County specific so if you move from one county to another you would lose it. Medicare Supplemental or Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan they are state based. If a person is not collecting their Social Security they must pay directly and this gets forgotten and it gets dropped. Also, doctors change their groups and that may affect your coverage.)
– REPORT that if you are on a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan there will be substantial changes coming.
– REPORT that from Oct., 15 – Dec., 7 you can make a change to your plan effective Jan., 1. Then for Medicare Advantage folks there’s an open enrollment from Jan., 1 – Mar., 31, 2024. You can make ONE MORE CHANGE @ this point in time.
– REPORT that all costs WILL INCREASE. Watch the changes in drug costs.
– REPORT that Brian has been doing this for 17 years.
– REPORT that his agency focuses on Medicare. Not many agents do this specialty. He will have on-line and in-person classes to attend to keep up w/ the changes. He has 42 agents that work under him.
– REPORT that Medicare is NOT just for older persons.
– DISCUSSION of his association w/ the clients from D.O.H.C. He is the LOCAL agent and phone number!!!!
– REPORT that there is no cost to help his clients make a sound decision about their Medicare needs and the clients DON’T PAY HIM.
– DISCUSSION of the commercial about insurance on TV called “lead aggregators” and how undependable they really are.
– REPORT that he can’t speak to the changes until Oct. If you didn’t make changes YOU CANNOT for the rest of the year. Now we are in a “lock in” period thru the end of year.

– DISCUSSION of Sept., 11, 2001.
– QUESTIONS FROM Joey Pals in the “Medicine Cabinet”.
1. Are we going back to mask mandates? From a John Hopkins Study and an article in the NY Times that masks did no good. (As far as Lindsey knows, no masks mandates here locally. Use common sense. Possibly masks in schools and/or hospitals. Masks are effective in reducing the transmission of the virus. The masks are not carcinogenic.)
– REPORT that the risk of spreading a virus goes up after 15 minutes.
2. How protected are you if you are vaccinated AND boosted? (Does not mean you will NEVER get ill. Most likely will not get hospitalized or dead. If you have HAD Covid, you will be even more protected.)
– REPORT that the new vaccine will be out in October.
– REPORT on the fact that we are now in respiratory infection Season, some Covid cases actually developed in people who went to a hospital for SOMETHING ELSE and developed Covid while there.
– REPORT that Flu Vaccination Season is here and flu clinics & drive-thru vaccination centers for D.O.H.C. members are open. No co-pay for D.O.H.C. Seniors. Should vaccinate down to 6 months-olds. Pharmacies give out the most vaccinations. Quadravalent is the new vaccine, covers 4 strains of the flu virus. Predicted from the effect of flu in the Southern Hemisphere. This strain of flu is pretty bad in Australia, especially in the children.
– REPORT that @ this point in time the Covid Vaccine is FREE to everyone, not just members.
– REPORT on the D.O.H.C. facilities around the Valley.
