3. What is the difference between stents and open-heart surgery? (A cardiac stent opens the blood flow to the muscle that is the heart. When there is a blockage that part of the muscle will die. Possible cause of a heart attack. This is a wire in thru an artery and inflate a balloon to open the area and then put in the stent. This allows the heart to heal long enough to tolerate the major open-heart surgery. People w/ stents have to be on anti-coagulant drugs. Some stents have drugs implanted in them.)
