– DISCUSSION on the progress of a vaccine. 90% efficacy of the new Pfiser Vaccine, as opposed to only 50% – 60% efficacy for the flu vaccine. Hundreds of millions of COVID-19 doses are ready to go. Most of the vaccines are 2 shot. We do not do human trial w/ exposure.
– DISCUSSION of BAMLANIVIMAB, an antibody treatment. Used for mild to moderate cases. Not for hospitalized patients. Use intended for emergency cases only.
– QUESTION FROM A “JOEY PAL”. Melatonin, along w/ 30 other medications, has been shown to make folks who take it 30% less likely to test positive to COVID-19 @ the Cleveland Clinic.
– QUESTION FROM A “JOEY PAL”. Will we get paid to take the vaccine? Cost is covered by the CARES ACT.
– DISCUSSION that D.O.H.C. will use the same method as the drive-thru Flu Clinics for the COVID-19. We now have RAPID-ID as well.

BROOKDALE MIRAGE INN w/ Kurt Suminski re: 72750 Country Club Dr., Rancho Mirage, CA., 92270. He is the Clare Bridge/Memory Facility Co-Ordinator.
– DISCUSSION of the Three levels @ Brookdale care provides: 1.) Independent Living 2). Assisted Living and 3.) Memory Care/Alzheimer’s/Dementia (Clare Bridge) that Kurt oversees.
– REPORT on the Veteran’s Day festivities the residents enjoyed out front under the portico. Many residents ARE veterans.
– Brookdale has now opened the dining room for Assisted Living residents w/ all COVID-19 precautions. Residents are so excited to interact w/ servers, the other residents, the food and cocktails. Chef Ramses has created new menu items to celebrate.
– REPORT on planned Thanksgiving Festivities outside. Independent and Assisted Living will dine in the dining room and Memory Care will be eating outside.
– REPORT that the Safari Lounge is open w/ all COVID-19 precautions. There is also “non-alcoholic” wine so there’s no interference w/ medication.
– DISCUSSION on the emotional level of the residents.
– REPORT that there are some vacancies in Assisted Living and possibly in Memory Care. Talk to sales and marketing director, Jennifer.
– DISCUSSION of the folks in Memory Care and what they do or do not remember from day-to-day. Tend to know the consistent staff. The pets are recognized pretty regularly.
– REPORT that residents can have pets in all three sections of residency.
– DISCUSSION of the different levels of stress during the Holidays from both residents and visiting family members. Some apartments have guest rooms for visitors/family.
– REPORT on the availability of “porch” visits and virtual visits.

DEMENTIA HELP CENTER w/ Kae Hammond re: President & Founder; 495 Town Center Way, 44 Ste., B, Palm Desert, CA. 92260.
– DISCUSSION of the conversation we were having w/ Kurt re: Alzheimer/dementia patients recognizing staff/family/friends. Voice recognition comes into play.
– DISCUSSION that patients tend to remember family members AS YOUNG. They remember you in the space THEY are in now, not where you really are. THEY REMEMBER PETS though.
– REPORT on the pain this causes the family/friend.
– DISCUSSION of finding a sentence to give the patient “a hint”. Pictures, small photo albums help. Involve the staff in this procedure too.
– DISCUSSION of the “left-over” from last month’s show…..How quickly we dehydrate, even in the winter….especially true for Dementia/Alzheimer folks. Telltale sign is a big red crease in the tongue.

FOREST LAWN w/ Larry Davis re: 69855 E. Ramon Rd., Cathedral City, CA. 92234.
– DISCUSSION of Larry being in the business for over 40 years and how it has changed during this Pandemic.
– REPORT on the county and state mandates for funeral services. Forest Lawn can now have services outside in the 2 BIG TENTS (first one in Coachella) he has that can have 50 persons for a service. Decorated w/ beautiful plants, fans, chairs, sound equipment, tv screens etc.,
– REPORT that folks still wear masks and sit w/ social distancing unless they are from the same household.
– REPORT that there have been earlier morning services outside in the tent and they have been lovely. The casket is there too and is open or closed.
– There have been functions and memorial services in the tent. People feel comfortable and safe in a private setting.
– REPORT on the demeanor of the families who lose loved ones during the Pandemic.
– DISCUSSION of how the planning meetings for services are now done over the phone w/ Forest Lawn.
– Forest Lawn has the appropriate plastic shields in place and provide masks for anyone who doesn’t have one.
– REPORT that our own mortality is being discussed more during this Pandemic. Time to make your final plans. Forest Lawn is having these conversations over the phone, on-line etc., Paperwork can even be done over the phone and virtually as well.

NEURO VITALITY CENTER w/ Dr. Jay Seller re: Executive Director @ 2800 E. Alejo Road, Palm Springs, CA. 92262.
– DISCUSSION on Bev Greer’s schedule and participation now.
– REPORT that there has been a real influx of “new” clients to come to them virtually. Referrals come from doctors etc.
– REPORT that IEHP sends over the referrals and then:
1. They do an assessment w/ a social worker. One and a half hour long.
2. You see a nurse, virtually.
3. Assessment w/ a physical therapist. Look for “transfer” issues. Some meet 3 times a week over ZOOM w/ their therapist.
4. Schedule w/ activities director. i.e. Zumba classes, rubber band exercises.
5. Evaluation of folks who live alone. Make certain these folks have socialization, even via ZOOM.
6. Evaluation w/ a speech therapist.
– REPORT that if you aren’t good on a computer, they will GIVE you a tablet and teach you how to use it. Can also do phone conversations.
– REPORT that in many instances, not driving is a plus. Meals are delivered as often as needed. Kitchen is “in-house” @ NVC
– REPORT that NVC can handle more clients than they have right now.
– DISCUSSION that there are two financial options. CBAS (Community Based Adult Services) under Medical or Private pay.
– DISCUSSION the caregivers are usually participating in the Zoom/virtual classes along w/ the client.
– DISCUSSION of the concern over “isolation” going into the Holidays. Depression more prevalent. NEED TO FEEL CONNECTED.

– REPORT that the three leading causes of trauma are; 1. Falls, 2. Pedestrian safety, 3. Car crashes (and motorcyles).

– DISCUSSION about the concerns during Thanksgiving Season. Increase in car crashes coming into the Trauma Center @ D.R.M.C. Also, pedestrian issues, as we are 4 times the national average for pedestrian deaths here in Palm Springs. More apt to have complications from a fall as one ages. 95% of folks who suffer a fall are admitted to Hospital. Falls are the leading cause of death in CA. for folks who are over 75.
– REPORT that pedestrians wear too much dark clothing, streets are dark in many places. New traffic lights and crosswalks are helping.
– REPORT that car accident victims are STILL NOT wearing a seat belt.
– REPORT in 2018, 30 % of car fatalities were alcohol related and 42% were drug related in California.

– REPORT that we are starting the 34th week of COVID-19 “Sheltering in Place.”
– DISCUSSION of a “Joey Pal” question…will the vaccine HURT? The side-effects are more pronounced than w/ other vaccines. 2nd shot especially.
– DISCUSSION of the U.K. “rule of 6”, if police see you w/ 6 or more people the police can break up the group and fine you. Study showed that these small groups had no effect on the virus.
– REPORT that 40% of Spanish population and 30% of Italians have been infected.
– REPORT 100,000 new cases a day and the virus has mutated, slower than HIV which mutates very quickly.
– DISCUSSION of the inoculum factor, or how much of the virus does it take to make you sick. MASK WEARING decreases the amount of virus you can get.
– REPORT on how health care workers are more exposed due to added exposure over a longer period of time.
– REPORT that how the virus travels OUTSIDE. Distance, then hand washing, then masks protect you best. A lot of spread is asymptomatic.
– REPORT that we are at 11.2 cases per 100,100 in Riverside County.

– GOOD NEWS that we are getting closer to a vaccine. All trials are back on line. i.e. Moderna study is over; Oxford and Pfiser, etc. Vaccine should be out for health care workers by the end of the year. FDA just met to study design for vaccines. Has to be 50 % effective. Need 2 months of study after the trail ends.
