– REPORT that senior centers are changing. Now we are dealing w/ the Baby Boomer Generation. There were/are 90 million of them. They have more social service needs, they have financial fees, association fees.

– ANNOUNCMENT that Joslyn Center is in collaboration w/ The Joslyn Wellness Center and The Volunteers in Medicine for bi-lingual counselors.
One place for all these services.

– QUESTION from “Joey Pals”
1. Can you lose your Medicare Coverage? (If you are on Medicare Advantage, these plans are County specific so if you move from one county to another you would lose it. Medicare Supplemental or Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan they are state based. If a person is not collecting their Social Security they must pay directly and this gets forgotten and it gets dropped. Also, doctors change their groups and that may affect your coverage.)
– REPORT that if you are on a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan there will be substantial changes coming.
– REPORT that from Oct., 15 – Dec., 7 you can make a change to your plan effective Jan., 1. Then for Medicare Advantage folks there’s an open enrollment from Jan., 1 – Mar., 31, 2024. You can make ONE MORE CHANGE @ this point in time.
– REPORT that all costs WILL INCREASE. Watch the changes in drug costs.
– REPORT that Brian has been doing this for 17 years.
– REPORT that his agency focuses on Medicare. Not many agents do this specialty. He will have on-line and in-person classes to attend to keep up w/ the changes. He has 42 agents that work under him.
– REPORT that Medicare is NOT just for older persons.
– DISCUSSION of his association w/ the clients from D.O.H.C. He is the LOCAL agent and phone number!!!!
– REPORT that there is no cost to help his clients make a sound decision about their Medicare needs and the clients DON’T PAY HIM.

– REPORT that he can’t speak to the changes until Oct. If you didn’t make changes YOU CANNOT for the rest of the year. Now we are in a “lock in” period thru the end of year.

– QUESTIONS FROM Joey Pals in the “Medicine Cabinet”.
1. Are we going back to mask mandates? From a John Hopkins Study and an article in the NY Times that masks did no good. (As far as Lindsey knows, no masks mandates here locally. Use common sense. Possibly masks in schools and/or hospitals. Masks are effective in reducing the transmission of the virus. The masks are not carcinogenic.)
– REPORT that the risk of spreading a virus goes up after 15 minutes.
2. How protected are you if you are vaccinated AND boosted? (Does not mean you will NEVER get ill. Most likely will not get hospitalized or dead. If you have HAD Covid, you will be even more protected.)
– REPORT that the new vaccine will be out in October.
– REPORT on the fact that we are now in respiratory infection Season, some Covid cases actually developed in people who went to a hospital for SOMETHING ELSE and developed Covid while there.
– REPORT that Flu Vaccination Season is here and flu clinics & drive-thru vaccination centers for D.O.H.C. members are open. No co-pay for D.O.H.C. Seniors. Should vaccinate down to 6 months-olds. Pharmacies give out the most vaccinations. Quadravalent is the new vaccine, covers 4 strains of the flu virus. Predicted from the effect of flu in the Southern Hemisphere. This strain of flu is pretty bad in Australia, especially in the children.

– REPORT on their mission statement; was originally the CV Mounted Posse. Have taken care of over 80 horses so far. Also have a sanctuary in Arizona. They take care of horses that can’t be riden etc., live out their lives.

– REPORT that they have 10 horses right now and a Pot Bellied Pig named “Mabel”. Janet Zapala wrote an award-winning book about Mabel and her piglet for children.

4. Career counseling.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS of the DESERT w/ Judy Tobin May, Executive Director re: 42600 Cook Street, Ste., 110. Palm Desert, CA,. 92211
– HOLD THE DATE: 9/29 from 5:30 – 8:30 PM “BIG GAME NIGHT” @ the Ironwood Country Club, 73735 Irontree Dr., Palm Desert. Adult night. Buffet dinner, drinks, game challenges w/ lots of fun games, with prizes. Outside on the patio. $125. For dinner, 2 drinks and all the games. If you call and use the code word “chocolate” you’ll get the ticket for $100.
– REPORT on mission statement. This is a FREE mentoring program that matches volunteers w/ children. Mentors spend 4 to 8 hours a month getting together doing activities. Especially important after Covid to add a positive role model to these kid’s lives.
– REPORT that volunteers are asked to spend @ least one year with a child, but the average “match” lasts 5 years.
– DISCUSSION of the children are mostly from single-parent homes. All scenarios.
– REPORT that there were 150 children in the program last year along w/ 150 volunteers. NEED MORE OF BOTH. Care is taken to make a good “match”.

– DISCUSSION of the meaning and emotion of putting a pet “down”. There are classes on grief counseling for the loss of a pet. The pets we have “never live long enough”. Attention should be paid to the quality of life for the pet.

1. Are these 5 breeds Vets recommend you SHOULD NOT HAVE as a pet… Huskies, any rescue dog, cockapoos, German Shephards and French Bull Dogs? (There is NO BREED that folks should not have. All dogs can be good dogs, dogs that misbehave do so because of the owner. No bad dogs, just BAD OWNERS.)
– REPORT that there are dogs that have too much hair/fur to live in the desert. Flat-faced animals have a problem w/ the heat also.
